"Media Violence Statistics" November 29, 2009
www.safeyouth.org

Summery:

It gives lots of fact and stats and i would like to share them. It says that 61% of television shows contain some sort of violence while on the other side on 4% show anti-violence themes. 43% of violence is involved with some sort of humor. No punishment was given for 75% of scenes with violence. There is a bad character in 40% of shows. in 2001 the 70 top video games 89% of them contained violence.

Response:

I agree that games and television are becoming more and more violence. I know that kids today would much rather play an action shooter game than a strategy game. When you play a shooting game ever thing that you conquer is like a personal battle that you just won. It boosts your confidence. Kids are now able to be judged at how good they are at games. It is almost looked down on in our society to not be decent at video games.

"Food Advertising Aimed Towards Children"
November 15, 2009. www.news-medical.net

Summery:
It says that 76% more food commercials per hour than other networks. It also states that one fourth of all advertising on daytime and regular television. It goes on to give stats about children channels. Out of 5,724 commercials 1,162 were food related. Most of these commercials are for sugary and sweet foods such as cereal and snacks. In 63 food ads only one was a nutrition related public anouncement.

Response:
I agree with all of these stats but i do have to question the subject of the essay. I believe that the parents still have the final say in what kids are putting into there body. Most kids don't have the ability to go grocery shopping by themselves. I think parents need to crack down on what there kids are bringing into the house. I think that the think that kept me healthy was my mom packing a lunch for me. When parents pack lunches if takes away the option for kids to choose for themselves.

How Face-book Addiction is Damaging our Children's Brains

Susan Greenfield, Baroness "Facebook Addiction"
November 1, 2009.www.dailymail.co.uk

Summery:

99% of children use the internet. In 2005 they were averaging 7.3 hours a week but by 2007 it was up to 13.8 hours a week on-line. Half of all kids ages 8-17 have a profile on an online social networking site. It says that when you chat online you loose your communication skills due to the lack of personal contact. Online you are able to come up with clever remarks and not worry about someone reading your body language. It says that social networking is popular because of the immediate gratification that people get. This gratification is also found in drugs and alcohol.

Response:

I agree with this article. I think that kids are spending way too much time on the internet. When kids go online just go online they will end up wandering to sites that they shouldn't be at. We need to teach people that they should go online with an objective. I know kids that spend two hours a day on face-book just doing nothing. I love face-book but when it becomes an addiction you know it is not a good thing. Its a great way to find information out but when it is abused it can become a very serious problem.

Is Christianity being Trumped by Media

Vander Lught, Dan "Should Christians Exclude Media." October 11, 2009. www.rbc.org

Summery:

The question that was asked was: Given the bad influence of the mass media in modern culture, wouldn't it be best for Christians to exclude it from their lives? They compared getting rid of the media to am Amish man on his carriage in the middle of the night. Vander Lught said that the Amish don't realize how dangerous automobiles are to them. He says that just because TV is not as censored as it once was does not meant that we need to get rid of it. He compared it to modern technology, he said there is both good and bad that can come from it.

Response:

I partly agree with this article it has good points and it has bad points. My favorite point that was made was about how medicine and automobiles there are both good and bad things that can come from them. I think that we should not completely shut out media from our life because I think that t connects us to the world. However, I believe that we have to govern ourselves on what we do and do not see. We have to have the ability to say yes or no.

Uneducated and the Media

"The Media and the Uneducated Masses." 123HelpMe.com. 27 Sep 2009

Summery
This essay talked about how the media in interviews asks very biased questions. They say that they are more interested in getting the person interviewed mad and heated then worrying about the actual answers to the question. Talk show host also have the power to ask questions that they want to get a certain answer for. They have the ability to sway the interview the way that they want. The media also can only share what they want, they can just take segments of things to make it look bad or good.

Reaction:

I think that this is very true. The media can take an interview of politician and cut and piece together just what they want. There questions that they ask always have a person to either make them look good or bad. I think that its stupid that we have different TV stations for different political views. An example is Fox and CNN, Fox is very conservative while on the other hand CNN is very liberal in what they show. When I read this I thought about the movie "Mickey Mouse Monopoly" it is the same concept after a while maybe just one television station will control all the media. When that happens they will have control over the people of the world. Without two sides of a story we would never be able to compare and contrast them.

Media Effect on child weight

Schutte, Shana. "How TV affects your child's weight" September 13, 2009 www.focusonthefamily.com

Summery:

Well this is such a great article. It talked about how kids will eat what they see on TV. it states that children under the age of nine still believe that all advertisements are true. Kids are being greatly influenced by characters that they love. If superman comes in the screen and tells them that he eats Lucky Charms then the kid is going to want that cereal. He wants to be just like superman. the article says that children will gain weight for every hour of TV that they watch. Young people today don't like to be very active and when you combine laziness with food intake there is going to be in increase in obesity. At the end it asks the parents to first better themselves before they buy the cereal for their children.

My response:

I love this article because it describes to me exactly what is wrong with our society today. i love it when people accuse the media of controlling our nation, when was the last time you saw a "5-year-old girl pushing a grocery cart through the snack section at the supermarket". You have never seen that because it is the parents that do most of the grocery shopping. I cant believe parents that give their kids everything that they ask for. All the adults are doing is ruining the lives of their children. Adults need to learn to say no to children even if they give a temper tantrum. I however agree that kids will eat what they see on TV. They want to do what their heroes are doing, that includes what they eat. i think that this is a growing problem and if it is not confronted soon, it will get increasingly worse.
